April 21 was celebrated as Earth Day, which is an annual, world wide event in place to raise awareness for environmental issues, education and  “greener” actions.

Earth Day started in 1970 making this year the 44th annual celebration. The first Earth Day lead America to the passing of the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act.

In the DFW area there are many events happening this weekend to celebrate Earth Day. Fair Park is hosting their Earth Day Texas event featuring interactive events, art galleries and live music. Headlining the festival will be speaker and environmental activist Ed Begley Jr. The festival is expected to attract over 60,000 attendees.

Austin’s KXAN news channel published four easy ways to go green in honor of Earth Day. The list included: Composting (collecting food scraps and using them as a nutrient rich soil), switching to LED light bulbs, investing in an programmable thermostat and using proper insulation inside your home. Other sources suggest  Earth Day participants go meatless, walk or use public transportation and plant trees and other plants to help reduce the amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

With Carbon Dioxide levels on the rise, and countries such as China experiencing hazardous amounts of air pollution, it is very important that everyone do their part in insuring that we keep our planet clean.
